The Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence is pleased to present the 2019 Fall Symposium Series, to be held Thursday through Saturday, November 7–9 at the Westin Arlington Gateway in Arlington, Virginia adjacent to Washington, DC. The titles of the eight fall symposia are as follows:

An informal reception will be held on Thursday, November 7. A general plenary session, in which the highlights of each symposium will be presented, will be held on Friday, November 8.

Symposia generally range from 40–75 participants each.

Special Plenary Events at the AAAI 2019 Fall Symposium Series

The 2019 Plenary Session, to be held November 8 at 6:00 PM, will have a modified format this year. The session will feature the following two special presentations, followed by brief highlights of the 8 symposia:

A 20-Year Roadmap for AI Research
Bart Selman
Cornell University

Bart Selman will summarize the findings of a recently completed, community-driven study to set research directions for AI Research for the next 20 years. Over 100 prominent AI researchers contributed to the study, which was sponsored by the US-based Computing Community Consortium (CCC), working with the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Association for the Advancement of AI (AAAI). He cochaired the study together with Yolanda Gil (University of Southern California and AAAI President).

Bart Selman is the Joseph C. Ford Professor of Engineering and Computer Science at Cornell University. Selman is the president-elect of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), the main international professional society for AI researchers and practitioners. He is also the cochair of a national study to determine the Roadmap for AI research to guide US government research investments in AI. Selman was previously at AT&T Bell Laboratories. His research interests include artificial intelligence, computational sustainability, efficient reasoning procedures, machine learning, deep learning, reinforcement learning, planning, knowledge representation, and connections between computer science and statistical physics. He has (co)authored over 150 publications, including six best paper awards and two classic paper awards. His papers have appeared in venues spanning Nature, Science, Proceedings of the National Academy of Scences, and a variety of conferences and journals in AI and computer science. He has received the Cornell Stephen Miles Excellence in Teaching Award, the Cornell Outstanding Educator Award, an NSF Career Award, and an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship. He is a Fellow of the American Association for Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and a Fellow of the American Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). He is the recipient of the Inaugural IJCAI John McCarthy Research Award, awarded in recognition of outstanding AI researchers at their mid-career stage.

Creating National AI Institutes (and other NSF AI Funding Opportunities)

National Science Foundation

On October 8, 2019, the National Science Foundation announced the creation of National Artificial Intelligence Research Institutes, a transformational approach to federal funding for AI. The $200 million program will support both fundamental and use-inspired research in AI, as well as innovative approaches to growing the research pipeline. I will describe how CISE bought together partners across the NSF directorates and many federal agencies in order to pioneer a whole-of-government approach to supporting AI research. The 2020 solicitation calls for proposals for full institutes on themes of national importance, as well as substantial planning grants for future solicitations. In addition to Institutes, I will describe other opportunities for AI researchers, including the Future of Work at the Human-Technology Frontier, National Robotics Initiative 2.0, the core IIS programs, and more.

Henry Kautz began a rotation as Division Director for IIS in June 2018. He is a professor and founding director of the Goergen Institute for Data Science at the University of Rochester. He received the 2018 ACM-AAAI Allen Newell Award.

ALL ATTENDEES MUST PREREGISTER. All accepted authors, invited speakers, symposium participants, and other invited attendees must register by September 20, 2019. Participation will be open to active participants as well as interested individuals on a first-come, first-served basis. All registrations should be completed by October 11, 2019.

Refund Requests

The deadline for refund requests is October 18, 2019. All refund requests must be made in writing to fss19@aaai.org. A $100.00 processing fee will be levied on all refunds granted.

Hotel Information

For your convenience, AAAI has reserved a block of rooms at the Westin Arlington Gateway. The Westin Arlington Gateway is located in the Ballston area of Arlington. It is a short walk from the Ballston Metro Station, which allows guests to easily explore Arlington, downtown Washington, DC, Alexandria, or Georgetown. Reagan National Airport is easily accessible via the Washington Metro rapid transit.

The conference room rate per night is $205.00 (King/Double).

Rates do not include applicable state and local taxes (approximately 13.25%), or hotel fees in effect at the time of the meeting. Symposium attendees must contact the Westin Arlington Gateway directly. Please request the group rate for the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) when reserving your room. The cut-off date for reservations is October 16, 2019 at 5:00 PM ET, local time at the hotel. Reservations after this date will be accepted based on availability at the hotel's prevailing rate. All reservations must be secured by one night's deposit per room, via credit card. Reservations may be cancelled with no penalty up to 5:00 pm, 72 hours prior to the date of arrival. After that time, a penalty of one night's room and tax will be incurred. Upon check-in, date of departure must be confirmed. Early departure will result in a fee equal to one night's guest room rate.

Metro Rail

Metro service is available from Reagan National Airport to The Westin Arlington Gateway. The cost is approximately $5.00 per person one way, depending on time of travel. From the airport, board the blue line towards Largo. Exit after 5 stops to Rosslyn and transfer to the Orange line towards Vienna. Exit at Ballston Metro Station. The hotel is approximately 3 blocks from the station. Additionally, Dulles International Airport is now easily accessible to The Westin Arlington Gateway via the Washington Flyer’s new Silver Line Express Bus.

Shuttle

The Super Shuttle van service will take guests directly from the airport to The Westin Arlington Gateway. The shuttle service picks up passengers outside of the terminal. Approximate costs from each of the airports are listed below and may be subject to change. Car

From Reagan National Airport, take the Gesorge Washington Memorial Parkway North, and then merge onto I-395 South toward Richmond. Merge onto Washington Boulevard via Exit 8A toward Ridge Road and then onto US-50 W/Arlington Boulevard toward Falls Church. Take the Glebe Road exit, turn right onto North Glebe Road/VA-120 North. The hotel is on the right.
