The Eighth Innovative Applications of Artificial Intelligence Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IAAI-96) was collocated with AAAI-96, and held August 4-8, 1996, at the convention center in Portland, Oregon
The Eighth Annual Conference on Innovative Applications of Artificial Intelligence (IAAI-96) highlighted successful applications of AI technology; explored issues, methods, and lessons learned in the development and deployment of AI applications; and promoted an interchange of ideas between basic and applied AI. Case-study papers described deployed applications with measurable benefits whose value depended on the use of AI technology. Invited talks were organized around the common theme of emerging areas for AI applications. Admission to IAAI sessions was included in the single joint registration fee with AAAI. The schedule was coordinated to allow attendees to move freely between IAAI and AAAI sessions.
IAAI-96 showcased the most impressive deployed AI applications of the past year. An application was considered deployed if it has been used for a minimum of several months and relied on for operational business decisions. Four categories of innovation were recognized:
- Demonstration of a new technology
- Application of existing technology to a new domain
- Application of existing technology to an old domain in an innovative way
- Demonstration of a novel integration of different technologies.
Taken together, the award winners provided clear evidence of the commercial value of AI technology as a key component of complex information systems. The papers were case studies that provided a valuable guide to designing, building, managing, and deploying systems whose value depended on AI technology. The papers also illustrated the applicability and limitations of various AI techniques. Organizations honored at IAAI-96 included:

IAAI Panels
The IAAI panels focused on critical issues involved in AI development and deployment. This series of panels explored important issues involved in delivering effective and successful AI systems. Each panel addressed a practical problem or theme of broad interest to developers of AI applications.
Invited Talks
Each year IAAI invites distinguished speakers from government, business, and research to share their experiences, as well as their thoughts for the future direction of AI development and applications worldwide. One of the invited speakers was honored with the Dennis O'Connor Memorial Lecture Award.
